Welcome, and thank you for trusting The Drum Coach. Below is a brief overview of what is included in The New Drummer Toolkit, along with a few simple instructions to help you get the most from it.
On the main page, you will find 3 core documents:
Audio versions are also available. However, try not to rely on them too heavily. The voice is based on my own, but generated with AI. Improved audio versions will be added in due course.
In the SOP menu item, you will be taken to a page containing all 28 Operating Procedures, ready for download. On that same page, you can search for a specific problem. If a suitable SOP exists, the search will help you identify the correct number so you can quickly browse down the page and open the right document.
Each SOP may also contain additional links to articles on The Drum Coach blog, helping you go deeper into the topic. Most of these will be free resources, although some may include paid recommendations where appropriate.
In the Toolkit > The New Drummer menu item, you will be taken to The New Drummer page. There you will find the main document, along with the 54 answers to common drumming questions.
You can either read the full document from start to finish or search for a specific question or solution. Within the main document, you will also find video links for each answer.
These videos are hosted inside the Drummery Drummers Social Community, so you will need to register there before you can access the video answers.
In the Bonus menu item, we have also included a selection of additional beginner documents to further support your entry into the world of drumming. You can read these at your own pace.
On the main Bonus page, we have also included a 7 Step Goal Setting Workshop. We recommend going through this once you feel grounded in your basic drumming skills. It always pays to know where you are going.
Please see the note on the Pro Tools page to learn more about the Pro Tools available.
Once again, thank you for joining us, and enjoy the journey.
Within the Pro Tools menu, you will find 5 tools arranged in priority order. This suggested order is designed to help you build good habits, stay organised, and track your development over time.
These tools are listed in priority order, so begin with Priority #1, The Metronome, as soon as you are able to play a beat, exercise, or movement with some consistency. Use it to improve what you can do.
The metronome should become one of your most important practice tools from the very beginning. Timing is at the heart of all good drumming, and regular practice with a metronome will help you develop accuracy, control, and consistency.
As soon as you have a basic foundation in place, begin using the Practice Schedule Creator to map out focused monthly practice sessions.
This tool does not choose the schedule for you. Instead, you complete the form and generate a PDF of your own planned practice schedule. Once created, your goal is to follow that schedule as closely as possible. This will also make the next tool much easier to use effectively.
Use the Practice Progress Tracker to measure and estimate your results over time. For example, if you choose 10 rudiments to focus on, you can use the tracker each month to assess how well you are improving in those specific areas.
This gives you a practical way to review your development instead of relying on guesswork. Make honesty your best policy when measuring results.
As you begin to build on your foundation, use the Affirmation Muse to strengthen your mindset and reinforce your focus within a particular area of drumming.
Whether you are working on dynamics, precision, coordination, timing, or confidence, this tool helps keep your mind aligned with the results you want to create. When all said and done, affirmations are simply tools of focus.
Everything ultimately leads to the Logbook. This tool allows you to keep a record of your practice sessions, band rehearsals, recording sessions, and gigs.
When you are just getting started, this may not seem especially important. But years from now, you will be grateful that you kept a record of your work, your progress, and your experiences.
The Logbook helps turn scattered effort into a visible journey.
Use the tools above in the way that best supports your own drumming journey. The priority order simply gives you a strong place to begin.
By planning your work and tracking your results, you give yourself the ability to look back and clearly see what worked, what improved, and why.
